ajberryWhy isn't this the standard descent?  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 26, 2014

Over Redcloud and Sunshine, then down over Sundog. Descent facilitated by lining up with a snowy gully running down the N slopes of the Silver Ck valley -- avalanches had deposited a nice snow bridge across the creek. Agreed with Sarah S below: why would anyone schlep back over Redcloud from Sunshine when hiking the Sundog ridge turns the day into a nice round? Nice addition to a pair of otherwise rather lumpen hills.

I remember driving to Silver Creek TH and sleeping there alone. How things changed… it is such a crowded trailhead during the summer months now.
I did first Redcloud, Sunshine and descended via Sundog.

For the life of me I don't understand why "Sundog" isn't the standard descent route for the Redcloud / Sunshine combo. Extra peak, min extra effort, no retracing, and this peak was the highlight of our day! Few others joined us over to "Sundog.". With Deb and Astroclimber.

HyadventureThree Peak loop  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 7, 2012

After the road washed-out we were stranded at the trailhead. I didn't want to waste a day so I did Sundog as part of the three peak loop. Sunlight and Redcloud were repeats.

Hiked the three from the Silver Creek Trailhead with my girlfriend Meghan. The class 2+ ridge from Sunshine Peak to Sun Dog was the most challenging and fun part of the day.

Followed Roach's standard North Ridge route on the ascent. It was so windy on the summit that we couldn't even stop for a break to celebrate Mike's 100th 13er. Descended the west/northwest ridge since it had looked dry and easy from the trailhead. We ended up having to traverse some snow slopes up high on the corniced ridge and were then treated to very loose, steep talus and crotch deep postholing below treeline. I definately don't recommend this route.

Climbed with Sarah and Dominic. Wind and some sketchy cornices kept us from repeating Sunshine, but this turned out to be a interesting day as we went down a different ridge and found some spicy sections. I wouldn't recommend our descent route though, too loose! This one was my 100th ranked 13er.

Summited at 9.36, en route to Sunshine. Impressive-looking peak, even though by & large just a talus slog (albeit steep- don't slip on the crappy rock!). Summit ridge scenic & enjoyable. Columbines growing there at over 13,000'!

Left the trailhead at 5:45 and was on the summit by 7:50. I highly recommend this as a great way to make a loop out of your Redcloud/Sunshine hike.
