Thanks very much! For its size and bulk, it was actually quite easy. It is amazing how trees this size can grow in soil like that.

Those Canary Island Pines are a pretty hardy sub-tropical pine. They apparently get a good deal of their moisture from condensations that forms on their long leaves and then falls or "rains" to the ground under the trees, much like coastal redwoods in California, USA. They take arid conditions pretty well, and are widely planted in warmer desert cities of the US, such as Phoenix.
