Mahogany Flats Route  Sucess!

A long hike, but well worth it. Surprisingly low winds at the summit, and a great view of the surrounding area (Badwater, Charleston, Whitney, Olancha, etc)

3 Peak Day  Sucess!

If not for the ferosious winds, this hike would have been a bore from Mahogany Flats. Tele, Bennie and Rogers.....wind ruined the air quality for long range sights. Cool to see 1000' plumes of sand coming up off the desert floor thought.

Rugged Panamints  Sucess!

Out and back from Mahogany Flat Campground. Good view of Death and Panamint Valleys and the rugged Panamint Range to the south.

Long walk

I hiked to the top of this mountain sometime in spring-summer. There was snow on the summit.

From Mahogany Flat  Sucess!

June 2013

Hiked with my girlfriend. We were working at Furnace Creek Resort at the time. Camped at Mahogany Flat the night before, which is one of the prettiest campgrounds around. Beautiful hike. I was especially impressed with Arcane Meadows.

Sand storm  Sucess!

Hit the trail at almost 10 AM. Nice hike in direct Sun. A permanent cloud above the peak freaked me out the whole time since it didn't move but rather got bigger & bigger and darker & darker. I feared thunderstorm. Got to summit in 2:55 from the trailhead. 20 minutes on summit. Got down in 2 hours fearing the thunderstorm. As we got inside the car and drove 100 meters a monstrous sand storm started that engulfed the whole mountain & Death Valley entirely. I've never seen a sand storm before. I was very happy we were not on the mountain anymore.

From Mahogany Flat

Road is rough but there were several sedans at the Mahogany Flat Campground.. The guy I hiked with had a Honda Accord and he had no problems getting to the campground. Weather was mostly perfect.. There were tons of moths and ladybugs at the summit.. There is a summit register and reference mark.. Didn't find the actual benchmark.. Not sure if there even is one..

From Mahogany Flat. First US peak!  Sucess!

After climbing for years in the Alps this is my first peak in the US. Great hike up from Mahogany Flat campground. Most challenging was getting our Kia rental up on to Mahogany flat.

Telescope Peak  Sucess!

I drove up to Mahogany Flats the evening before and camped. The next day I got an early start and was up and back by noon. Really fun hike and the views out towards Mount Whitney and White Mountain, as well as Bad Water Basin were unbelievable.

From charcoal kilns  Sucess!

17-mile round trip; it was a struggle getting my low-slung passenger car as far as the charcoal kilns! Well worth it for the scenery and solitude. A light dusting of fall snow on the peak itself.

Mahogany camp  Sucess!

Drove the 91 civic to mahogany camp, barely made it. Spent the night in dead calm, dead silence. Hiked up in the morning with backpacks, dropped them in the trees after the saddle. Amazing views to the summit, slowed down going up the final switchbacks, very happy to reach the summit. Views!!! Camped in the trees before the saddle. Hiked to car next morning, then down to Panamint resort.

Telescope Peak  Sucess!

Went to Death Valley over Thanksgiving and hiked Telescope Peak. Beautiful views on the summit and along the ridge line. It is a mostly trail hike. Some of the switchbacks leading to the top were icy, so we had to be careful. I enjoyed the high altitude compared to Death Valley.

From Above Thorndike CG  Sucess!

Some people have suggested that regular passenger vehicles can make it to the Mahogany Flats CG and Telescope Peak TH, but don't trust those notion. I was only able to get my high-clearance rental SUV (2WD, not 4WD) up the road to 7800' elevation (halfway between the Thorndike & Mahogany Flats CGs), when I suddenly hit a steep rocky spot that felt as soft as sand to drive onto. There was slightly enough room on my driver's side (an apparent pullout spot for 4WD vehicles) to do a multi-point turnaround... which almost got my SUV stuck. I drove down 50' to a more-defined car-camp type of pullout. Although that pullout location was excellent to leave the vehicle parked, don't get too confident about even reaching that location with a 2WD high-clearance vehicle, as much of the road beyond Charcoal Kilns is in poor shape.

As for the peak, I did a morning hike. Some people had spent the night at the Mahogany Flats CG but I never encountered them (or anyone else) on the trail. The trail is in excellent shape. Clear-blue skies changed to hazy skies as I reached the summit. Awesome views from the top! Highly recommended summit hike.

Spring climb  Sucess!

Did Bennett, Telescope, and Rogers from Mahogany Flat CG. Folks had been getting to the top for at least 10 days prior: low snow year, and a warm spring! Still a little snow in spots on the final switchbacks, but boot-packed.

And the road up to Mahogany Flat is in great shape. It was regraded last Fall, so currently an ordinary car can make the climb up the hill. This won't last long!

Telescope  Sucess!

April 19, 2010 - solo, started from Charcoal Kilns as road had high snow patches past this point and I drove a Hyundai Accent. Had to post-hole nearly chest high snow for the last 1,000 feet. Thank goodness I had lived at 8,000 feet in Montana all winter long.

Nice trail hike  Sucess!

I met a friend from Colorado out at some camp ground below Mahogany Flats. We drove up there the next day and walked the trail to the summit. Nice, well maintained trail in good weather. The following day we followed it up with a trail hike up Wildrose. It was a break from all the off trail climbing I'd been doing up until then. And I've wanted to climb Telescope for years, especially since I could see it from nearly anywhere I was climbing in the greater Las Vegas area.

Maghogany Flat  Sucess!

Car camped at Maghogany in 4 to 5" of fresh powder. Left with girlfriend for her first winter ascent. Very cold, experiencing the tail-end of a storm. Got -19 F. that night with the wind. The wind and snow drift was slow ascending. Made it summit and the wind died down. Weird! Head down and the wind picked up again. Climbed up to Roger Peak and descended the road and x\c to Maghogany.
