The final bit of the route to...
The final bit of the route to the Mallory Cave itself leads up this 3rd/4th class rock face. The fence just above Jonathan is closes access to the cave between April and October.

Nice pic Charles. But why do they close access to the cave in the home of the free?

Ah, sorry, should have explained. Mallory Cave (and several other, lesser-known caves) are closed from 4-1 to 10-1 for maternity colonies of Fringed Myotis and Townsends bats. The former, at least, are moderately endangered. There are various signs about fines and jail-time.

This is not to say that there aren't plenty of other caves you can visit on this hike at any time of year. There are loads of small crevices to climb around in and take shelter from the elements. These are not closed and have shown little or no sign of bat activity. All part of the fun of climbing Dinosaur Mountain.

This cave is literally mobbed with hikers in the summer. That being said, I've never seen this fence in place, but it's been a few years since I've been up there. Since I'm not a huge fan of hanging out in tight spaces with throngs of strangers, the crowds are far more effective than this fence in keeping me away from the cave in the summer months. But add a little ice, snow and/or water to this gully, and 50 feet of skinny rope comes in real handy (yes, I'm a wimp). As cool as the cave is (who carved that target in the back?) I prefer the massive block under the north face of the Box, or the summit area of Dinosaur Mountain itself.
