This guy was on the Mesa trail. Anyone know what he is? He wasn't too happy when we hiked by and coiled up and hissed at us before retreating into the grass.

Gopher Snake

It's a gopher snake, sometimes called a bull snake. They're non-venomous and they do the coil up and hiss in hopes of convincing you that they're a rattlesnake.
