The Monument

The Monument
Seen from the start of the hike into Black Velvet Canyon.

The small peak on the right is called East Monument Peak and even has its own register. The dome-like peak left of center and partially obscured is known as Hidden Peak and is actually slightly higher than the highpoint of the Monument, which is not visible here (the peak in the center is not the highpoint but definitely looks like it from this angle).

The peak on the right is actually called East Peak around here, and is distinct from what Branch Whitney calls East Monument. The elevation of West Monument is NOT the 6252 from the symbol on the map -- that's just a usgs spot check, and was picked by folks from aerial photogrammetry, probably because it was a clearer spot. The peak SE of the spot elevation has another contour band, is a much sharper peak; it's definitely the highpoint, and may even be higher than Hidden Peak.

I've been on the summits of both Hidden and Monument and do think Hidden seems slightly higher.

But I am a little confused here. What I'm calling East Monument is so according to CP's book, and although I can't be 100% sure on this, I could almost swear that the register had East Monument as the title.

Is there a name for the peak in the middle here, which is part of the whole Monument complex but not the highpoint?

Oh, and on the Monument page, I have the elevation at 6300 at least, because I did see the contour lines on the map.

CP had it wrong, at least as far as Branch Whitney calls it. Without a sighting level, the difference between Monument and Hidden is too close to call. Each one looks higher to me from the other.

I'm almost 100% certain the register said East Monument. Shortly after climbing it, I wrote the route page with information still fresh in my mind. Maybe CP based the name on the register as well. Maybe I will add the other name as a parenthetical and add it to the search query terms as well.

Branch Whitney makes a big deal out of distinguishing the two.
