This was part of a longer 15.4 mile hike (#12 from the Falcon Guide "Hiking Virginia"). Watch out for the prickers infesting the summit...and ticks. I pulled several from me at the end of the day.

I climbed it once in January 2010 and once in June 2010. It was a lot of fun on that cold, clear day in January with several inches of snow. It was hellish that day in June - high humidity, ticks, and a sea of stinging nettles guarding the summit.

Ascended the old Peak Trail in about 3.5" of snow. The snow and the steepness made my trekking poles even more useful then they normally are. At the summit it was socked in with snow and sleet and the temperature was around 29 degrees. Even if the views weren't there it was still a great trail/bushwhack. I would say that 75% of the time I was able to locate a blue blaze but in the summer/spring I could see that being nearly impossible.

Bushwhacking not nearly as bad as I imagined it might be, though summer would be a very different story.

I summited The Peak on a cold December afternoon last year. The blowdowns and the steepness of the trail made for an interesting hike.
