The Sierra del Carmen Range

The Sierra del Carmen Range

The higher range here is the Sierra del Carmen, most of which lie on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo del Norte). The range in front of the del Carmens, which you might not see as a range without enlarging the photo, is the Sierra del Caballo Muerto. That is, incidentally, now on my list of favorite mountain names. (The ridge clearly visible in the foreground is just a ridge. Nothing to see here.) We're looking east here, and the river flows almost north, mostly in between the two nearly-parallel ranges in Boquillas Canyon. This was an unusually cold day (11F) in January 2010. This is a low-elevation site that is not far from the tropics. As you can see, the lighting was also weird that day.
