Re: Great Little Adventure

Thanks for the report. Were you using the picture from 2017 from the image gallery? Curious if you still required that much route finding even with that really nicely annotated picture. This one: https://www.summitpost.org/route-overlay-slabs-approach-half-dome/1002461/c-157308

Great Little Adventure  Sucess!

My teenage boys love "climbing", but are less enthusiastic about long hikes. So I decided to try this approach as an alternative to the usual long slog to Half Dome cables. It took us roughly 8 hours to get from Valley floor to the Cables, and probably half of that time was dedicated to route finding. There's a fairly obvious path for 75% of the route, but the other 25% left us investigating different alternatives, with a fair amount of trial and error. But that's what made it so fun! We eventually found all fixed ropes, and all were in pretty good condition. But first person up each fixed rope section mostly avoided the rope until we could confirm their condition. I definitely recommend climbing helmets as it's very easy for leaders to accidentally send lose rocks downward. My son took a baseball size rock straight to his helmet, which would have otherwise been a disaster. All in all, a super fun adventure for anyone comfortable with class 3/4 scrambling.
