The upper Whitney Glacier and Shasta's west ridge on August 12, 2001. The west ridge is typically used for the Cascade Gulch route. It's also possible to reach the summit via the upper Whitney Glacier by crossing over from the ridge to the glacier a few hundred feet up from the saddle (not visible in this photo) to avoid the bergschrud and possible ice cliffs.
