Theodore Winthrop
Theodore Winthrop. Abolitionist and first Union Soldier killed in action in the American Civil War (1828 - 1861). Mount Rainier's Winthrop Glacier is named after him.

The first 120 pages recounts his trip to Katahdin. An 1860 photo of Winthrop and painter Frederic Church is to be found in the Smithsonian section of Flickr photos.
