Three Fingers at dawn from...

Three Fingers at dawn from our miserable snow cave in a wind-funnel notch near the summit of Whitehorse. Western Washington is known for mild winters, but in January '82 we had 2 or 3 weeks of hard freeze. Here, it's about -10F. and two of our party already have shallow frostbite. Read all the gory details in the Trip Report. Lat/Long given for this picture is for the photographer's location, not Three Fingers.

Mount Rainier is 94 miles south.

G-zus

you guys are animals! Great trip report. This baby is very underrated as both you and I know. Any time you want to do it again, I'm on!

Re: G-zus

My sorry knees wouldn't get me to the glacier now. It's a hell of a trip to have done, though. Memorable, too. In fact, the only notes I used to write the report were the dates on my slide frames. Some things just kinda stand out. Like the things you almost die from. (Hope I'm not reducing your chance to find a partner.)

Hey Don, I'll do it with you if we can figure out a good time. Maybe sometime this spring? I'm sure I could get Duane to join us too. I'd need a weekend day, however, not a weekday. -Bob

You are on, Bob!

Sure, let's put it together. I'd love to get back up there with someone who knows what he's doing!

Re: nice pic

Ascent of Three Fingers, or Whitehorse? Either way, have fun & take care. We had two rescues on Three Fingers last month. One party of three wasn't prepared for the wind & wet, and got too hypothermic to hike down. Two weeks later somebody slipped on the glacier & messed up his knee & ankle. It took a major overnight effort by dozens of rescuers to get him down to Goat Flats. Luckily, the weather cleared enough for a chopper about then. A carryout down that trail would have been Godawful. Start early & be careful.
