I can't help myself...but to think that these balanced rocks are a work of a few climbers with a sense of humor, or architectural imagination! But, I would not be surprised if you say they are completely natural.

Re: I can't help myself...This place is a hill in the middle of the plateau of Lastoni di Formin, where it appears a spectacular 360 degree view on the various groups of the Dolomites. People probably built over time these huge cairns. Those are several and make the place truly magical!

I have not info about how long ago these cairns dates. This place is a hill in the middle of the plateau of Lastoni of formin, easily reached by a walk. Lastoni di Formin show towards SW a steep wall, while an easy path climbs up on the opposite side. Stone may be stacked in recent times by some hikers, but it is possible that they can date back to a period much more remote. Nearby this place an exceptional discovery of a prehistoric site was made in 1985: it's the burial of a hunter of the Mesolithic-era, perfectly preserved, the Mondeval man...

Re: Really interestingMost of our cairns in the UK are Bronze Age, and I suppose that original ones could have come from that period. I think this sort of burial ritual were pretty similar throughout Europe during that period (although at different points in different places). The presence of a Mesolithic burial could suggest that it had religious or cultural significance for a long tume; I do not know of any evidence of cairns being associated with Mesolithic rituals though.
I don't suppose there could be a simpler answer, like the original formation is the result of some sort of peri-glacial weathering? That can create some really intersting formations!

Re: Really interestingPeri-glacial weathering? It could be, although it is quite difficult to determine the origin of these rocks.
Observing how carefully the stones are placed up, I would be inclined to think of buildings made by man, but the area is very extensive and some stones are really huge ... Probably people who had come to the hill completed a natural work, adding some smaller stones to the existing ones...

stones in lastoniMost of these rocks have been put in place by a single man in september 1998 in a single day and other were added in 1999. People passing have put some hats on the top in the following years.
In the same time an "ank", egiptian symbol of life was built in the west side of the standing stones.

we meet again thanks to the standing stones of Lastoni. I've ever liked to find the stone 'ometti'that we find along the pathway in mountains. They speak us of someone who passed there before and thought to us without knowing who will be the one that will pass there next time. It's a way to let a message to a sure friend that will be there in the future. So I begun to repair the 'ometti' that I found on my way and after I begin to build my own 'ometti' in my solitary walking. So I was no more alone,in time and space. Dolomites gave me more than that I spent in effort. Looking around from any point, any peak, I saw all the wonder of univers around me.
In Cortina, the last year I was there, every sunset I was on a different mountain top. The moment was everyday different, magic and full of beauty, peace and mystery. What a croud of feelings!

I am perfectly in agreement with you, the cairns - or ometti in italian - are useful to those who will come after us, but are also a sign of the presence of man on the high lands. Even I when arrive on an unknown peak or in a wild place I often build a cairn who will be the track for who will come after us.

I no more go to climb in Dolomites 'cause of age! And I no more climb too!...But the mountains gave me a lot of joy, emotions, feelings. Dolomites where one of the last places I visited but the one who gave me the best, my wife too. Now, (I am a capricorn), I left the peacks of the head my sign and, following the fish tail, I'm exploring the magic of sailing: meditation sailing in soft breezes. But the cairns are always magic and make me meet also you, a sister in climbing and cairns.

no matter if you don't climb now, the mountain memories last in time!
I'm happy to know that the Dolomites are your favorite mountains, it is the same for me. I climbed in many different mountain ranges, but the Dolomites remain the best for me
Also the sea is fascinating and sailing is a wonderful activity, i think.
I am no longer young, too, so I have to try to keep fit in order to continue for a while, as long as I enjoy it...

i already knew that some mountain landscapes in the movie Blackhawke are located in Dolomites and just now i've discovered that the moment when the two lovers meet in the sunrise like hawk and wolf, has the Pelmo and the Lastoni di Formin as scenery! Beautiful!
