What a wierd cloud......effect! I presume orographic cloud - forming on the sheltered side of the ridge... I can no longer the remember the explanation for the conditions required!

Re: What a wierd cloud...Thanks a lot, Mark! It was very mixed, changeable weather - once sunny, then overcast, then clear after just a couple of hours - and very moist. That was part of it. I've seen many times this phenomenon - cloud or fog building up on one side of a mountain and then halting, as if there were an invisible wall. I don't know either really how this functions, though.
It wasn't really an orographic cloud, though - the Torre del Finestrino is more something of a side summit, on the east side of the ridge that forms the southern end of the Catinaccio group.
