Grays - Torreys  Sucess!

Hiked the North Slopes to Grays and the South Slopes to Torreys from Stevens Gulch Trailhead. Clouds hovered around the summit and I considered going back to the trailhead instead of heading up to the top. Decided to go for it and the weather improved.

First of many  Sucess!

This was the first of many climbs of Torreys. Most climbs were from the Stevens Gulch trailhead on the normal route combined with Grays. I have done variations of Kelso Ridge 3 times. One of those times was from the Grizzly Gulch side meeting it above the Kelso saddle. I have also hiked over from Loveland Pass to Torreys and then down to Stevens Gulch trailhead.

1st Fourteener  Sucess!

Torreys was my first 14-er. At the time, I was such a flatlander that it really felt like a slog. It's amazing how perspective changes with experience.

Grays and Torreys from Stephens Gulch  Sucess!

I had just moved to Colorado, and Grays and Torreys would be my first 14ers since moving here. The day started kind of gray, but didn't look threating. Easily bagged Grays and then headed over to Torreys. And while resting upon the summit it started to spit little balls of sheet. So at that point I started down, and when I got to the saddle between Grays and Torreys it was nearly whiteout conditions. Further down the snow turned to a cold rain. Fortunately I was dressed for the occasion, however many other folks were hiking in cotton sweatshirts, jeans, sneakers and no rain gear. At this point I'm thinking I am going to read about a lot of people who die due to the elements on these mountains.

Standard Route  Sucess!

Did the Grays/Torreys combination. Nice day, still snowy packed over most of the area. Lots of post-holing that day, and lots of skiers and snowboarders.

Kelso Ridge / Torreys to Grays  Sucess!

A fine day of climbing solo. Snow made the final 200 ft or so kinda of difficult in approach shoes.

Kelso Ridge  Sucess!

We took the Kelso Ridge challenge and loved it! At the crux of the ridge we went right and down to avoid the bum slide. It was class 3 and just fine.

Route Climbed: Stevens Gulch TH (G-T saddle)  Sucess!

Climbing this late in the season was a tad tricky. There were lots of ice on the trail from the timberline on up. I slipped a few times and one of my friends, Daisuke, did it with his basketball shoes. LoL! We were young and daring, but we summitted both peaks! I'm recording this as the first time I took Torreys & Grays. There were other ascent up these peaks afterward but they're too many to mention.

A Peak for All Seasons!  Sucess!

Just signing the log. I've climbed Torreys several times and have been up there in all seasons. Some of the biggest avalanches I've ever seen (disregarding Nepal and the Cascades) were on the east face of Torreys during a three day heavy snowfall. A beautiful, fun peak in any season.
