Overview

Maybe Kamniska Bistrica will someday be treated as a Logistical Center.
This page is about many trailheads, that is, many free parking lots along the upper course of the river named Kamniska Bistrica (short: Bistrica).
The Kamniska Bistrica is an affluent to the Sava river.
Above and N of the city of Kamnik, a road starting at Stahovica leads us along the left bank (the right side, looking upstream) of the Kamniska Bistrica to its source.
From Stahovica to the Trailhead hut there are 8 kms, with marked posts every 0,5 km. These posts along the road will help situate the parking possibilities, and the heads of our trails to huts, saddles (passes), walls and summits or interesting features such as a canyon, caves, waterfalls (one freezes regularly!), boulders, cliffs, and even a alpine ski resort.

The altitude of Stahovica is 420m, and the altitude of the Trailhead hut is 600m.
The altitude of the main summits is superior to 2000m and some are above 2500m.
The gain in altitude is great, which speaks for the steepness of the paths.
The forest line is at ca.1500m.

KM 0
Bus stop
Stahovica supermarket opening hours.
Undemanding marked and secured paths:
E: Saint Primoz (826m, frescoes, traditional museum), Mala Planina (1534m, hut).
W: Ambroz pod Krvavcem (1088m), Kamniski Vrh (1259m).
N: "Kozeljeva Pot", a picturesque hike which follows the upper course of the Bistrica on its right bank up to the source. We may catch this path again at km 2 (bridge after the quarry), at km 5 (gondol ski lift), and between km 7 and 7,5 (Predaselj canyon/gorge).

KM 2
Just after the quarry, a bridge crosses the Bistrica, permitting us to catch the Kozeljeva Pot (see km 0).

KM 2,5
Between km 2,5 and 3, the Konjska valley (E) offers an unmaintained unmarked path which visits its right bank slopes.

KM 4,5
by starting eastwards straight up in the woods, one soon crosses a maintained, unmarked hunter's path ("Cez Rigeljc").
By following this path to the right we eventually reach the settlement on Velika Planina (alt.ca. 1500m).

KM 5
Bus stop.
Much arranged parking areas.
W: a bridge crosses the Bistrica, permitting us to catch the Kozeljeva Pot which follows the Bistrica's right bank (see km 0).
-An undemanding marked and secured mountain-hiking path (in the continuation of the bridge, following the macadamized road) leads to Krvavec (ski resort), along the Korosica stream, a right bank affluent to Kamniska Bistrica.
Further unmarked routes leave from this path, f.i. the one to the Bear Cave in Mokrica or these 1, 2, 3, 4 routes.
E: the Velika Planina gondol Ski lift (Hotel Simnovec, 1400m).

KM 5,5
The fine Kopisce settlement is between km 5,5 and 6 (mind the beehives by parking at km 5!).
To the right of the meadow, an undemanding marked and secured mountain-hiking path leads eastwards to Planina Dol (1320m, meadow).
To the left of the settlement a (demanding) unmarked path (Martinj steza) also leads to Planina Dol. This path is longer than the former, passing the entrances of old mines (keep out of those!), as well as a rock climbing favorite: Martinj Turn (tower).

KM 7
The Kamniska Bela brook comes in from the E (parking after the bridge): 1, 2, 3, 4 routes.
The first part of these routes is common and leads us to the picturesque Orlicje waterfall (30 min).

KM 7,5
A bridge crosses the Kamniska Bistrica, giving access to the Kozeljeva Pot (see km 0) and to the Predaselj canyon/gorge.

KM 8
Bus stop.
Dom v Kamniski Bistrici, the trailhead hut, as a start for hut routes and approaches: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Details on driving passed the trailhead hut (advanced trailheads along macadamized roads) may be found on the route pages.

The trailhead hut is at the source of the Kamniska Bistrica river (shortly Bistrica) in the center of the range.

The trailhead hut is open all year long (except on mondays): 45 beds (reserve!, check the External Link), meals searved, two large (free) parking lots, garbage cans and a beautiful view of Konec (litterally: the end -of the valley) from the source (pond) of the Bistrica.
Along with the "official" trailhead hut, the guest house "Pri Jurju" also proposes meals.
Boulders and Sport Climbs are to be found in the valley.

Getting There

Info on approaching the range is in the Getting There section of the range page (Kamnik-Savinja/Steiner Alps).

By clicking the coordinates in the primary info (above) and then using the map version, the city of Kamnik very soon appears.

The road 225 from Kamnik to Gornji Grad (eastward) goes through a village named Stahovica. This is where the 8km long (asfalted) road starts, leading to the Kamniska Bistrica source, along the left bank.

A bus comes in to the trailhead hut twice a day (Ljubljana, Kamnik, Stahovica, Kamniska Bistrica).
