Tree Lupine (Lupinus arboreus)

Tree Lupine (Lupinus arboreus)

Tree lupine is actually a woody shrub that can reach approximately 7 feet tall. It is native to the coast of California where it grows on dunes and coastal bluffs. It has also been introduced in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. All parts of lupines are toxic, especially spring foliage, flowers, and fruits. Lupine consumption by pregnant females can cause birth defects. Cows and goats that eat lupines can pass toxins through their milk and cause deformities. Death from lupine poisoning is rare among humans but livestock that eat lupine in great quantities may die. Photo from Pt. Reyes, California. June 2002
