I climbed Mt. Davidson next to Virginia City earlier in the day, so I didn't get an early start on Snow Valley Peak. No matter, it was a beautiful day. I paid my entry fee at Spooner Lake and found the Trailhead on the Northeast side of the parking area. North Canyon Road is a nicely graded dirt road heading north almost directly towards Snow Valley Peak.
I was soon passing and being passed by bicylists who were trying out their legs. Some were in top shape and moving along at a good pace. Others were suffering and pushing their bikes up the hill. Once in a while there were bicylists coming down the road and they were going fast. Look out for these so you don't get run over.
Just about as the road tops out at a pass there is another road that is signed off to the right which leads to the summit. This road is a little steeper and some bicylists left their bikes near the gate and walked from here to the summit. It is still a ways up the mountain and the road does a couple of switchbacks. The good thing is you get out of the trees and the views are breathtaking.
Near the summit you cross over the Tahoe Rim Trail. There were also a few snow patches to cross before the summit actually comes into view. There is a short communication tower on top and the summit is just south of the building in a group of little trees and brush. There is a summit register in a concrete block at this point.
I took my time, ate my lunch, took pictures, signed the register, and enjoyed the solitude of the summit. There were lots of people on the lower road, but not too many venture up to the summit. On the way down, I passed several people who were heading to the summit. A nice hike on a warm beautiful day in Tahoe. About 11 miles round trip in 4.5 hours. 2,264 ft Elevation Gain.
