It was our deputy friend Caleb, my brother-n-law Tristan, and myself
on the skin of Mt.Silliman today. We left at 4:30 am because of
certain obligations that needed tending to after the adventure. Armed
with my new GPS and having plotted waypoint data and a route, I was
supremely confident that today I would not end up on the wrong
mountain again. Tristan and Caleb hung in there with me just fine
untill it came time to assault the slabs below Silliman lake. They
both became very aware, very suddenly, that we were
climbing...hehe. I must admit those slabs took a little outta me as
well. Caleb decided he would end his upward thrust at Silliman lake,
and he waited for Tristan and myself there. All I can say is that I
love my new GPS...it saved us from climbing a mountain that wasnt
Silliman. We ascended the green gulley at the northwest end of the
upper lake, and then traversed right. Too far right because my GPS was
now telling me that Silliman was behind me. So instead of climbing
another nameless mountain we obeyed the technology and found our
summit. We spent little time there "20 minutes maybe" enough to sign
the register, take some pics, and admire the view. I began jumping
around to each portion of the summit block to make certain I was on
the very top. After stupidly hurdling over a 5-6` crevice between
opposite sides of the summit block about 3 times, I noticed that
there was a several hundred feet drop if I should
misstep. Scary, man.Anyway,we hurried back to our friend at Silliman
lake, who understandably was ready to descend. This hike would have
been easier for all if we had a proper nights rest. Both Tristan
and myself were on 2 hours rest and Caleb on about 4 ;( Oh yah...we
had a nice bear encounter...he was brown and quite large...I have a
small video clip of it that I shot with my digital camera.
