This is a nice well maintained trail that starts on the north side of Goosenest. Today, I drove down from Medford to explore some of California's 2,000 ft prominence peaks. Goosenest is #39 on that list with 3,160ft of prominence. I left I-5 in Yreka and followed SR3 to Montague and then continued east up toward Goosenest. The roads are not marked well, but I had loaded several waypoints into my GPS and I eventually found my way to a nice trailhead on the north side of Goosenest at about 7,300ft elevation.

The trail is well maintained and does a series of switchbacks up the north side before it traverses across the west side of Goosenest. Then it does a few more switchbacks up the southwest ridge to the crater. The trail then follows the south edge of the crater up to the east rim where the HP is located and a nice register to sign. My GPS said it was only 1.75 miles from the TH to the summit with about a 900ft elevation gain. This is a nice hike with great views of Mt. Shasta and the Shasta Valley. It took a little over an hour and a half for the round trip hike.

After summiting Goosenest I went on to tag Willow Creek Mountain to the north and The Whaleback to the south. A nice easy day of hiking.
