DAY 1: Saturday August 6th, 2005

12:00 Depart Westensleep trailhead parking area
16:00 Hike to Waterfall (30min past Misty Moon lake)

DAY 2: Sunday August 7th, 2005

6:20 Start ascent

* Weather is good, no wind, no clouds overhead
* Hike up taking time, wtihout much strain
* No to very little wind across the "narrows" ridge
* Several snow patches past narrows. Snow is firm to go on, yet does not require crampons

10:30 Reach summit

* Surprisingly the first to summit that day
* Weather is still good, but wind is starting to pick up from the south (10-15mph). Distant clouds in the west

11:30 Descend to camp

* Elk sighting at ~12,000ft! Broken front leg and possibly dislocated shoulder
14:30 Arrive at camp
18:30 Depart for Westensleep trailhead parking lot
22:00 Arrive at parking

Notes/ Suggestions:

* Start Early 5,5:30 AM to avoid the afternoon storms
* When get on top of the big circe , stay to the left as there is flat ground with a 10-20 ft wide path with no or small scree rocks - easy going.
* Make sure you are well hydrated

xylonaElk Sighting - Aug 13 2007

Strange coincidence... While making for the summit me and my family also sighted this elk, thought it was a mule deer though. It didn't make it... uhm, here's proof.

Extra advice: keep your eye on the sky! Especially in the direction the wind is coming from. We had a cloudbank on the horizon come up on us within an hour while we were summiting and had quite a snowstorm on the way down. The rock-hopping gets treacherous once your shoes (and the rocks) get wet!
