Frantic Fun

I reached the Hurrican Ridge lookout via nighthawk motorcycle as the sun was getting low in the sky. Looking northeast from Sunrise Ridge, not knowing what peak I was viewing, I thought to myself "I want to climb that". I knew I had very little time to do so before dark so I started jogging along the trail and hoped I would make it back before dark.

On Klahhane Ridge, I accidentaly ran right past a black bear that was poking around and making a lot of noise in the bushes. Understandably, I did not stop to consider the bear but kept right on going. I think my sudden appearance scared the bear because by the time I realized what it was, the bear was already moving away from me.

At the end of the Mount Angeles trail, I struggled up the scree and ascended the middle couloir not knowing there was a better route to the north-east. These rocks proved to be much harder than they looked and almost vertical in a few spots. I'm sure it would have been a lot easier if I could have traded my clunky hiking boots for some climing shoes but since I had not even planned this hike, I didn't have so much as a water bottle with me. The top afforded great sunset views of Mt. Olympus and the straight of Juan De Fuca.

After watching the sunset, I jogged back to the parking lot just as dusk was setting in and from there rode down the winding Hurrican Ridge Road in total darkness. Looking back, I know the whole thing was a last-minute rush with a few near misses, but overall it was a lot of frantic fun.
