Across the Jostedalsbreen glacier

Wednesday, may 24 2006 at 13:00, we started from Trondheim, and at 23:00 the camp was set at Vetledalsseter, near the northern edge of Jostedalsbreen. Jostedalsbreen is the largest glacier in northern Europe, and it covers a vast 400 km^2 alone.

Day one: Vetledalsseter - Ståleskaret

Thrilled by the view, we went to bed after some café avecs, and the next day, we woke up to fog and a cloudy sky. We started walking the 500 vertical metres up to the start of the glacier, which were gained through a tiny path through snow and rocks. On the way up, we saw a large rock drop off the mountain and down towards two other groups, but luckily, it was stopped far away from them. However, they must have been a little shocked by the enormous rock heading for them!

When we reached the glacier edge, some of the local people of the other group decided not to use ropes up the first glacier, Erdalsbreen, so neither did we. Jostedalsbreen is a snow covered glacier, and this day the snow was heavy and wet, so the risk was not very big. The snow bridges would very likely hold our weight, and the largest cracks were still visible.

On the top of Erdalsbreen, we made one big mistake - we did not check the conditions of the ice fall called Småttene, which we had to get through. The other group did, and had an easier way through. After making our way down Lodalsbrekka, we had lunch, and started recap'ing glacier rescue and the different situations we had trained for.

Småttene was beautiful - a paradise of ice sculptures made by nature herself, a result of thousands of years with snowy weather in Sogn og Fjordane. We tried to walk on the side along the side of Lodalskåpa, the highest peak of Jostedalsbreen, but after a short while, we were stopped by a large crack in the glacier, and headed into the world of ice sculptures.

Day two: Ståleskaret - Ramnane

Day three: Ramnane - Fjærland
