Mushroom Monolith - aka Cowboy Hat Tower TR

I have lived and hiked in the immediate vicinity of this mushroom shaped monolith for two years, but did not really notice it until I spotted Scott's Cowboy Hat Tower page on SP. Took the dog out yesterday to take a look and wound up climbing this improbable overhanging feature. I must take exception with the recommended gear as suggested by Scott. My kit contained:

-(2) rolls of high-quality fly paper
-(2) sections of twenty meters of cinnammon dental floss
-(1) persian rug (10x12 feet)
-(1) ice-cold Pabst Blue Ribbon

and of course, my helmet and cowboy hat.

This was a neat-o feature, obviously quite delicate. The rusted bolt near the top belies the incredible history of this tower. I would like to learn more about the early ascensionists...sigh, guess I need to buy a guidebook.

More importantly, I noticed that my ascent left some minor marks on the rock. I hope that future climbers take care to not degrade this tenuous tower more than necessary.
