The Original Fowler-Hilliard Hut

The Fowler-Hilliard Hut was one of the 10th Mountain Division huts outside of Leadville Colorado. The hut was built in 1988 on a ridge at 11,500 feet near Resolution Mountain in the Gore Range. The hut provided access to acres and acres of the best skiing in the 10th Mountain Division Hut system, literally right from the hut's porch.

Unfortunately, the hut was struck by lightning and burned down without loss of life or injury. Currently a yurt is in place now, and the hut should be rebuilt for the 2010-2011 season.

Getting There

There are a myriad number of ways to get to the hut, especially if you are traveling from one hut to another.

If you just want to ski up to the yurt, drive north from Leadville on highway 24 halfway to interstate 70, to Pando (elevation 9,200 feet). Ski northeast up McAllister Gulch to the hut. Total distance is 5 miles with an elevation gain of 2,300 feet.

This short jaunt means you can skin up in your T-2s and Hammerheads to rip some turns.
