Snowy  Sucess!

Hiked up to the top of the Cooling Tower from Hwy 22 a year prior with Karl. Went back this time with Karl and did the Hwy 22 approach to Hall Ridge and then over to Tumble. Traversed to the base of the rock on snowshoes then used a shortened trekking pole to help scramble over to the trees. Some scrambling on slushy snow and icy tree branches and then a couple of airy steps to the summit. Wonderfully sunny window of weather. Would be neat to come back in the summer when it is dry to do this again. Heck of a workout gaining what, 3500 feet in 2.5 miles? My legs will feel it tomorrow.

Third of three Knutson Saddle hikes  Sucess!

Karl wasnt kidding when he said the trail was faint. I drove past the trail three times before finally spotting where it climbed up the embankment on the side of the road. I lost it repeatedly then would find it again by pure coincidence while bushwhacking my way to Tumble. I tried free climbing the same face outdoorgirl did before making my way around to the "tree-climb". That was basically a ladder/stairway of branches to climb all the way to the summit. Really a cool hike, definitely the highpoint of the day.

Perfect Day!  Sucess!

After playing around with some rock routes and no protection, looking down below and seeing just air, it was nice to find a partial treed way to the summit. What a beautiful day to be able to get to the top! A goal to go back and tackle the more "exciting" routes someday.

Another great adventure...  Sucess!

Instead of driving up the road just to find snow draped across the road near the top, we decided to take the more direct physically challenging route. Straight up from Detroit Lake. A 2.6-mile x 3200'gain climb up a faint trail. The weather was perfect...sunny skies with a cool breeze = no bugs. Colleen & I had never been to Tumble Rock before so we spent a lot of time exploring the perimeter to find the best (only) scramble route.

While perched at the summit we saw a vehicle on the road which was an indication that the road was open...oh well, we needed to get in our conditioning hike anyway.
