Blocked by Ice  Sucess!

April 26 2015, up the Loop trail, very icy.

At Fat Man's Misery could not go through as it was 100% choked by ice.

Ascend a 15' vertical face to a level area and go around to the right.

There's a knife edge split, edge across that, and then make a sharp left along a face on a shelf back to the gully & trail.

Not too hard, about a 5.3. Don't fall.

Thankful we found this alternate route, because the trail would have been miserable going down without crampons and rope.

Very rewarding day. Up the Loop, down the Brook in 3.5 hrs.

AMC route  Sucess!

Climbed the AMC 5.6 route up the sw ridge, in a t-shirt...beautiful windless day. Meandered around the AMC route and variation, found lots of great rappel anchors and pitons in weird spots. Beautiful rock, some loose blocks but nothing too bad, lots of shrubberies...tried to veer onto the AMC variation but ended up on an easy exposed knife edge up the last pitch. Comfy belay stations the whole way...descended via the summit and down to the pond and Brook Trail, made a nice 5hr loop. Tons of nice rock faces...the north peak also covered with nice slabs.

First Hike Every   Sucess!

This was my first hike ever, years ago my father took us up to crater pond on the Brook Trail. I love the views and all of the hikes on this mountain. It truthfully never gets old. Have climbed them many times.

Snowshoed Brook Trail  Sucess!

Snowshoe trip. Started around 9:30 and got back to the cars at 3. Lots of fun. We had to park a mile from the trailhead and while the road was packed down, the trail was fresh, lots of powder. Absolutely beautiful. Too bad the camera batteries died on top (cold) it was gorgeous. Great mountain.

Tumbledown Mountain  Sucess!

Climbed via the Little Jackson Trail from Bryon Road. A great short hike over some truly stunning terrain. The views of Tumbledown and Little Jackson from Crater Pond were fantastic and even on the fourth of July there was hardly anyone there.

AMC Route  Sucess!

We climb the old AMC route (5.6) every fall. Leaving the car at the base of the Brook Tr., hiking west up the road, up the Loop Tr. to the base of the route, climbing it, reaching and traversing the ridge to the pond, then down, makes a wonderful alpine day- not to be missed. Terrific scenery and really good climbing make for one of the best climbs in Maine.

Winter

In Feb of '79 turned back with frost nip in -13 temps plus a howling wind. Have since done it in the summer and it's a nice scramble.

carry down  Sucess!

I carried an 80-year-old woman part way down the trail, pick-a-back. I think I so scared her, that she found the strength to walk the rest of the way.

All school hike  Sucess!

Every year Gould Academy (a boarding school in Bethel, ME) takes a day off of classes and goes for a hike. I managed to get in both the East and West peaks during the day before we had to leave.
