| I forgot my wifes hiking boots back at the hotel, so she sprinted ahead of me in anger wearing her Tevas. As usual, we hiked much faster than normal. The more angry one or both of us is, the faster we reach the summit. It sounds sick but it works for us. She even accepted my apologies on the summit. | ||

| Bill Jirousek | First time to Red Rocks ![]() Date Climbed: May 12, 2005 | |
| In Vegas for a bachelor party, I conviced a few friends to take a side trip to Red Rocks. It was amazing there, I wish I could have spent more time. Turtlehead was a fun climb even in brutal 100 degree weather. I had the summit to myself and I sat there for a while taking in the views. Got off the trail on the way down and the loose ground made for some slipping & sliding. | ||

| This was the result of a succession of changed plans for the final day of my southern NV/UT tour. I wanted to do a big loop around Rainbow Mtn/Rainbow Wall/Juniper Pk, but forgot to bring the beta... so I decided to come back in the spring when there's more daylight to do that, and when I don't have to drive back to the Bay Area the same day. The next plan was a loop around Mummy Mtn, Charleston Pk, and Griffith Pk... until I was woken up in my car at the North Loop TH at 3am by howling winds buffeting my vehicle and a thermometer that said 19 degrees outside. Uh, no thanks. So I headed up to Turtlehead Peak as a shorter, slightly less freezing destination. Lost the trail on the way in, and found a cool little scramble through a narrow wash amongst the Calico Hills (I assume) before heading up to the peak. Surprisingly good summit views considering it's such a minor peak. Get here early to avoid the crowds... I had the trail to myself, but there were dozens of people heading up once I got back to my car. | ||

| This was my first time to Red Rocks. I thought Turtlehead Peak would be a good one to start with. Great view from the top with about a dozen other people there. I saw some other peaks that I would like to climb next time I'm there. | ||

| An easy dayhike, but don't go here if you want some solitude. Other summit dates: Too many to list or recollect. | ||

| My second time up the only Nevada peak I've climbed so far. Last time I did it, on Christmas Eve 2003, it was so overcast there was no view from the top (I couldn't even see the quarry below!). I had to go back again to see the view. Next time I'm in Vegas I think I'll give Mount Charleston a try. | ||

| I hiked the 11 mile "Grand Circle" route around Red Rock Canyon in 3 hours and wasn't tired so I went back to Turtlehead to add it to the day's hike. Glad I did. Fun scramble and the view of the Vegas strip is fantastic. Got a bit off the trail near the summit but it isn't hard to make your own way up. | ||

| This is a short but rewarding hike. The views from the top are tremendous! A good workout. There's no way to get lost, but the braided trail allows for some fun "route-finding," particularly toward the top of the gully. | ||

| In the middle of summer, I knew we were asking for punishment, but we did it anyway. It was 100+ deg F at the trailhead and 95 deg F at the summit. Needless to say, we were the only ones on the summit and we ran across a couple of others out there. There was a good breeze at the top but it was like a hair dryer on "hot" blowing in your face. We both had 2 liters of water each when we began and it was all gone by the time we got back to the car. Although it was brutal, it was a nice hike and we got a nice view of Red Rock and Las Vegas. | ||

| A little windy at the top, but Vegas was clear due to the wind. I could see Lake Mead, which normally is hidden by smog. | ||

| Josh | Route Climbed: Standard Trail (1st time), SW Face (2nd time) Date Climbed: 3/11/02 ![]() | |
| I climbed this peak twice today. The first time was just a morning run up the standard trail. Half-way through the day, I got an e-mail from John asking if I had ever taken a look at the SW face with climbing in mind. I said, no, and promptly drove out to Red Rocks to have a look. I bushwacked up to the face and found the left side to be very loose, dirty, and steep, so I hiked around to the right side. This seemed a little better. I followed a short section of 5.easy up to a class 2 ramp. Then I followed the ramp for a few hundred feet to a headwall. I climbed the loose, steep limestone for a couple hundred feet to the summit. This last section was 5.6-ish. I don't recommend this climb to anyone. There were only a few enjoyable moves and lots of pulling on questionable rock. There's a huge amount of excellent rock at Red Rocks, so don't waste your time on this piece of crap. | ||

| Too windy and cold today to climb anything serious, so I ran up Turtlehead instead. When I got down, I did a little bouldering near the Sandstone Quarry parking lot. | ||

| The morning temperature was too low for me to feel like rock climbing, so I hiked up Turtlehead Peak. It was an uneventful, snow-free hike. When I got down, the temperature had warmed up nicely. I spent the rest of the day free-soloing multi-pitch moderates. | ||
