Two Foxtails

Two Foxtails

...mouse click to enlarge... This 4x5 Provia 100F transparency was exposed through my 90mm Caltar lens in July of 2007 in Sequoia National Park in the alpine heights of a remote area of the Great Western Divide. These two foxtail pines, pinus balfouriana, live on an exposed granite ridgetop with rusty metamorphic 13,802 foot Mount Kaweah in the background between the two. Due to occasional brutal winds, foxtails often take on a flagged form where bark on the windward sides of such trees is eroded by blowing particulates like sand and snow crystals leaving bare white wood while trunk and limbs bend towards the leeward side with foliage hiding behind. We'd first seen this pair during a backpacking trip in 1994 from which I still have a small 35mm Kodachrome image marketed on my website. Then this year made the long pilgrimage back to what I consider the finest two specimens of this species in order to better capture their grandeur with my heavy view camera. The image will be available as Lightjet fine art print via Gallery B on my below homepage. David Senesac Photography http://www.davidsenesac.com
