Beautiful Fall Colors  Sucess!

Had family visiting that wanted to see the Colorado Fall colors. A quick trip to Boreas Pass and a hike up Madonna Dome did the trick.

Madonna  Sucess!

February 15 2014

We were all tired from the late night before, so we didn’t plan a big day. The blizzard was still continuing on and off throughout the day as well. It was a very warm night though and never dropped below 18F. After a very late start, I did climb Madonna Dome (12,331 feet/3759 meters) to the west of Boreas Pass. Kim and the kids decided not to try the climb in order to save up energy for the next day’s climb. The weather was OK with light snow and cloudy skies. I had to break the trail most of the way up to 12,000 feet, but the ridge was windblown after that. Avalanche danger was high, so I had to make my way by using a winding and non-direct route that avoided any avalanche danger.

From the summit, I had a good view of Bald Mountain, which would be our destination for the next day. The climb looked reasonable and I could pick out the route to the saddle and then along the ridge to the summit.

After climbing Madonna Dome, I returned to Boreas Pass and the Section House. With the trail already broken on the ascent, the return back was much faster.

January 15 2012

There were some girls having a birthday party in the Section House, so Shaylee decided to stay with them after they invited her to come. Kim, Kessler and I decided to climb Madonna Dome, a 12,331’ (3759 meter) peak west of Boreas Pass.

With snowshoes we made it to Point 12,027 and enjoyed the views from there. The winds were high and it was cold, but the winds weren’t as strong as the day before on Boreas Mountain.

After Point 12,027, the rest of the route to Madonna Dome was blown clean of snow and we ditched our snowshoes. We climbed down to the saddle and up the steep slopes to the summit of Madonna Dome. It was windy, but we found shelter behind a snow bank and ate lunch there before returning down the mountain. The views were great and once again we regretted not having the camera.

nice short hike with family  Sucess!

Quick hike we got done in the morning. Overcast with a cold wind blowing. So cold we ate lunch in the car. Great place for wildflowers when in season.

From Boreas Pass  Sucess!

Leisurely hike to the top afforded some great views of the higher peaks in the area. I had missed this one because it is unnamed on the topo maps back in the day when I did the Hoosier Ridge traverse. The mine shaft is interesting to look at but would be a bad deal to slip and fall into. I wonder if it is covered with snow during the winter?

Tour de Boreas Pass  Sucess!

Climbed solo, after an out an back traverse of Boreas and PT 12700B to the east it was then on to "Madonna Dome" on the west side of the pass. Breezy and cool, but a nice clear morning. Lots of "leaf peepers" on the road out, slow drive with all the traffic!
