Occupation: Artist or Unemployed Bum
A Few Words: As you can see, I am a man of few words. Heh,heh ,heh.
My first mountain was Mt. St. Helens. [ I think, I may be the last person to have climbed it. Before the historic eruption of May 18th, 1980.]
I climbed it, without climbing experience, and not much more than a pair of "Rockport" Hiking boots. I had to sneak into the "Red Zone", set up by the U.S. Forest Service around the mountain. To climb it. I went through Earthquakes, Mudslides, falling rocks, and bad weather. I climbed solo because no one would go with me. [ understandable]
I was a "Wild man " in my youth. I left home at 16 , hitch-hiked to the Missouri Ozarks. Found a cave in a bluff, and lived in it. [ I was influenced by the book, "My side of the Mountain", as a kid ] I got a job, at a small local sawmill. For a $1.60 an hour. [ I had to do some fast talking to get on there ]. It turned out, the owner's son had just left home too. I would ride the School Bus to work. Unfortunately the Sawmill was down the road from the Grade School, not the Junior High. So it made me look a little "slow" getting off there.[ Hey it got me there.] All the local kids thought I was "cool". They called me" Daniel Boone".
In my early 20's I "hitch- hiked" all over the" West". I even got a ride to Anchorage Alaska once, with an Army Captain, and his Wife. I am a Dad now. With a Wife, and 5 Children, [ Ages 9-16 ] 4 Hampsters, 2 Dogs, and a Stray Cat, that calls our house, home. I spend my time, Hunting, Fishing, Boating, Painting, and Spelunking with my Kids.
I believe "Climbing," and "Everything else", has become way too "Regulated".
People say I was reckless, crazy, or stupid, for climbing St. Helens when I did. Maybe so. What about the three Italian P.O.W.s, who escaped a British P.O.W. camp, and climbed Mt. Kenya? With nothing to guide them, except a poorly printed picture of Mt. Kenya, taken from a "Kenlon" brand, "tinned" beef can. They then, returned to the camp, and turned themselves in. They were the "first" by the way. [They probably missed that good o'l home cooked- British gruel. ]
Or the "Sourdoughs" who met in a bar, and wagered they could climb Mt. Mc Kinley. And did. In the dead of winter, carrying a 12 ft. lodge pole for their flag.
My favorite Poet and Writer is Robert Service. My favorite humorists are Mark Twain, and Patrick Mc Manus. I like being alone in the "Wild". I never feel alone there. [ of course when you have 5 kids, you may want to go there for some peace and quiet ] Heh, heh, heh.
