Velebit style 'crevases'

Velebit style 'crevases'

~ Velebit / South Velebit / Sveto Brdo-Vaganski Vrh group ~ Beware of these beasts! On the places where warm air flows from inside Velebit to the surface such huge holes open in snow. Such holes are present all along the highest peaks group between Struge and Sveto Brdo. Holes are as deep as is snow cover and very dangerous, especially if hidden with fresh snowfall. This one is 6m deep! It is interesting that when there is no snow no openings are visible on the surface. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

very interesting

same thing happens in the karstic limestone plateaus of the Northern Alps like Tennengebirge or Hagengebirge but usually the warm air comes out of vertical caves, so better not step or ski into it :-)

Re: very interesting

Yes Klaus, so typical for karst. Many of these snow holes are overhanging (bell shape) so fall into it would give you serious headache if alone or with company but without rope. When passing by them on the trips when I'm alone it gives me shivers when I think about falling in accidentally :-)
