May 21, 2005 - As Joe and I...
May 21, 2005 - As Joe and I were climbing up the North Ridge, we noticed that if we flicked bits of snow down the slope with our poles, the bits of snow would entrain more snow until it grew into a sizeable sluff. It looked like flowing cement and a constant hiss emanated from the flow as it worked its way several hundred feet downhill from us, growing ever larger. Although only the top 1/2 inch of the snowpack seemed to be sliding, it was obvious that the daytime heating was making the snowpack dangerously unstable!
