I took Var. 1 on the way down on Aug. 12, 2007. I don't believe there is a trail (none that we found anyway) and it was talus and scree all the way to treeline. It started lightning all around us as we thankfully reached the bowl. The weather, discontented that it couldn't strike us let go of the sky and it hailed on us for nearly an hour. But weather permitting, this is a great route.
