Stage 1 of the Ptarmigan Traverse ends at Kool-Aid Lake, a tiny tarn surrounded by heather and snow and perched on the upper slopes of the Middle Fork Cascade River cirque. Level ground here is at a premium, especially if you're going to be environmentally (and legally) correct by camping at least 100 feet from the lake.
