The last few switchbacks above the North Fork Sauk River on trail 649 climb through timberline and into extensive, steep alpine meadows. Despite the unseasonable rain (July 28, 2001), the trail was minimally eroded and not too slippery. High above, the PCT traverses the south flank of White Mountain.
