Although it looks like a hog,...
Although it looks like a hog, it's not. It is a javelina. In the U.S. these are only found in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. There are plenty of them in Big Bend and you will see plenty of them in the cooler winter months. These we saw along the trail to Elephant Tusk. Keep your distance as these have razor sharp teeth and can be very brave in groups. November 25, 2005. Photo copyright attm.

Thanks Susan. Desert hiking in the winter is fantastic. Winter hiking in the desert includes only the cool stuff like this but doesn't include rattlesnakes, scorpions, and centipedes because of the cold temps.
