The view north from Heavens Gate shows the divide between the Snake and Salmon Rivers. The area is locally known as "The Island" because of the long peninsula formed between these large rivers. Most of the divide in this area is over 8,000 ft. elevation. The divide also forms much of the east boundary of the Hells Canyon Wilderness and the Hells Canyon NRA. July 2005
