Gordon on the technical traverse (pitch 16 in Burns' guide) of the Normal Route of Nelion. I'd personally call this section the crux of the climb- fun stuff, w/ plenty of exposure! The mist was a perpetual companion on the mountain, building in the morning & staying until the evening. 7 January, 2006

Voted 10/10 | How much more remote can you get, than a high technical wall in Africa? Really cool, congratulations! | | Posted Feb 7, 2006 5:26 pm |

Hasn't voted | Surprisingly, one is most definitely not alone there during high season. We met more S. African climbers there than I knew existed, & the Austrian Hut is the base for trekkers attempting Pt. Lenana as well, so the whole area actually gets a good amount of traffic.
Despite this, though (& the fact that there were 2 other parties on the route the same day we were), we really did have solitude on the mountain for most of the day.
Thanks! | | Posted Feb 7, 2006 5:59 pm |

Voted 10/10 | I also remember this pitch as being quite gripping!
You cross over the ridge, look down a yawning amphitheater/couloir and then proceed with a delicate traverse across to the other side. Technically it's not too difficult, but you definitely don't want to come off!
