view of Nelion from the aptly-named Gate of the Mists; observation will show our fixed rappel line (a 50m rope)- this fixed line can be used to secure oneself (for instance with a prusik) during the ascent (see kick-steps to the L)- the disadvantage is that the ascent line deviates from the rappel significantly, and any slip (after starting the traverse to the L underneath the boulder) would result in a nasty pendulum fall. 8 January, 2006

Thanks, Radek. The Gate of the Mists is pretty spectacular. From a catwalk not more than a foot or 2 wide, the mountain drops down steeply & abruptly & goes down thousands of ft before mellowing out. BTW, that's a f^&$ed up cartoon you got on your profile page, yo (I say this because I understand)
