Looking northeast along the spiny ridge of The Castle from the airy summit with another view of what I've dubbed the ugliest rappel station in the Cascades. The station anchors are long runners slung around a prominent horn. These runners detract from the naturalness of the ridge and can even be seen from far below the peak. Ack! First, thanks for posting the Winter photos. The Tatoosh range is a different place in Winter and your photos illustrate.

Regarding the ugly rap station. Curious. Did you downclimb or use the ugly anchors and rap?

When we climbed this Summer it was late in the day and we found a rap to be safer and quicker & didn't find a solid, less visible place to set a simple anchor.

Maybe if the slings weren't a brightly colored they would be functional and not so visible from below?

We could have downclimbed where we came up. I freeclimbed it up (about 15 feet of rock wall climbing with great steps/holds), but we chose to rappel instead from the ugly rap.

I agree that changing the slings to a darker color would help, but even then they'd probably be noticable. The rappel is in a good location but it's still ugly. I'm not a fan of bolting, but this would be a place where an anchor chain hidden on the north side of the horn would be more aesthetic.
