Squeezing through the Airblower [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Squeezing through the Airblower
More fun IN the mountains, in this case, squeezing through the dreaded Airblower in Hamilton Cave, WV. It's about 30' long and angled slightly downward. The tightest part is about ten inches wide and triangular in cross-section. THIS is the scariest thing I have ever done. June, 2002.

Yeah, well, you know... The webbing is there to haul Tom out if he got stuck. ;-)

That must of been a real adrenaline rush. Pretty far out but I wouldn't do it.

Not so much an adrenaline rush as complete slow terror. That's the thing about caving; it puts you in a position where you simply _have_ to deal and work through the problem. There is no other alternative. A little claustrophobia is a good thing sometimes.

I've done a very short section that was pretty tight, but 30 friggin feet with a 10" squeeze--that's unbelievable!

Yeah, did I mention it was slightly uphill on the way back? That's the problem, once you get through, you have to get through _again_. I no longer go through squeezes where you have to exhale all the way to fit the tightest parts.

That's the stuff i love! I worked at Wind Cave National park for two years and found some nice tight stuff.

Actually, that's the stuff I hate! When it comes to caving, I'm definitely a monkey-boy, not a squeeze freak or mud puppy (previous photos of mine notwithstanding). Haven't done any caving recently, but for a long time it was my life.

ChrisYou are nuts.

No way in hell would I try that (nor would I fit!). Very cool though.

unbeliavable... if one knows it's doable, maybe, if my life depended on it, and barely then - but the first one to try it?

...imagine being the first one ever having done it here - not knowing if you'd get stuck or be able to turn around...

Well, it's a little less unbelievable knowing the first guy who did it. He's about 110# soaking wet and could probably go through that thing on hands and knees! He's also certifiably nuts... definite a plus in cavers ;-)
