Hasn't voted | This kind of image for me is more informational than scenery. When one is viewing this scene, the rusty Paleozoic geology colors are considerably less saturated than are being rendered here. Of course the high saturation makes for a more aesthetic image than the experience. | | Posted Oct 1, 2006 1:32 am |

Hasn't voted | Sorry you don't like it. As with all my photos, I try to create what I saw when I took the photo. I think I came pretty close on this one. If anything, it would be more realistic if the light on the peak was more saturated. | | Posted Oct 1, 2006 4:31 pm |

Hasn't voted | Others ought to know that area will not be an intense rusty red when they actually visit. There isn't anything wrong with being creative with the saturation to make your images mores aesthetic but it is far from reality. In this same Convict Canyon image gallery below are several images by others that are realistically natural in rendering of hues. Let the readers judge that. ...David

Hasn't voted | One of the beauties of the Sierra is that the mountains change color during the day depending on the lighting conditions. The photos you've referenced all seem to be taken on slightly hazy/smokey? days in the midday sun when colors, especially reds will not be as saturated. I was fortunate to be there on some clear days, and selected morning and evening conditions so that the mid-day blues would be less dominant.
Also, the reddish metamorphic rocks in this area are the reason Bloody Mountain got it's name. | | Posted Oct 10, 2006 11:14 am |

Hasn't voted | Well you seem to want to deny that your images are unnaturally saturated and are resorting to bogus rationalizations that you certainly won't get agreement with from any un-biased visitors familliar with that area. Like I said there is nothing wrong with posting such over saturated images these days as most photographers are upfront about that since such is quite popular with Velvia and all. I have the background to argue your comments and could link many images from third parties from sites like webshots. But for the sake of not continuing a pointless exercise in debating will just say peace and goodbye. ...David | | Posted Oct 10, 2006 6:16 pm |

Hasn't voted | Perhaps the photos look different on your screen than mine. I think they represent what I saw fairly well. The subtleties of lighting that I have previously described are not "bogus rationals" but have been previously documented by many experienced photographers. | | Posted Oct 11, 2006 12:11 am |

Hasn't voted | Are you saying that you didn't digitally saturate your images whatsoever? I have to agree with Dave that your pix, though very beautiful indeed, do seem to be quite a bit more saturated than most others' submissions. | | Posted Dec 5, 2007 12:54 am |

Hasn't voted | Saturation is one of many tools available (including desaturation) to attempt to bring an image back to my recollection of the reality. As I said earlier in the thread, I tend to select conditions where the reality is fairly saturated, and avoid the opposite. | | Posted Dec 5, 2007 5:18 am |

Hasn't voted | Done. That figure of metamorphosed sedimentary layers on the side of Mt Morrison is probably my favorite 'small' detail that I've seen in the Sierra. | | Posted Dec 5, 2007 2:51 pm |
