LVC on April 1st
Calvin Kilcrease bids farewell to Lee Vining Canyon for the season, 1-April-2006. We'd broken trail into the canyon that morning, and climbed Spiral Staircase (WI3+, 1.5 pitches) on the Main wall, followed by a little mixed / thin on Chouinard in the afternoon.

Spiral staircase is so far my favorite climb in LVC. No special reason, just had a fun day.

We had a good time on it, too. It was a little spooky getting into the cave to the belay bolts that day because there was just a lot of not-very-firm snow to pull over ("trust your feet" territory). Then getting out of the cave and traversing left onto the curtain and heading up was kind of spicy ... I am certainly not brave enough to lead it yet.

Another footnote is that we climbed entirely on leashless tools that day - Calvin with a pair of quarks, and me with x-monsters.

I was actually pretty surprised at how well the x-monsters handled, but Spiral was the steepest I've ever climbed leashless. I found myself climbing somewhat more carefully.
