Routes to Wheeler Geologic Area [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Routes to Wheeler Geologic Area
Two route options to Wheeler Geologic Area are illustrated here. The dotted red line is the meandering 4WD Pool Table Road. The dark blue line is the Hanson Mill backpacking route.

The toughest thing about visiting the Wheeler Geologic Area is getting there via these routes. The hiking alternative is easy but long and recommended as an overnight hiking route. The 4WD route takes two hours to drive in one direction. Although not difficult, you need to take your time to spare yourself a flat tire on sharp rocks and to cross numerous gulleys carefully. This map vividly illustrates why it takes so long to reach Wheeler. Embellishment by Aaron Johnson using the Topo! Regional Series software from National Geographic.
