Attack Chipmunk [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Attack Chipmunk
While descending the Mt Lassen trail, Buster, the attack chipmunk started stalking me. No kidding, no matter where I was for about 150 vertical feet of trail, I would turn around and this monster was there, wanting my food or my wallet. Finally, he left me alone and turned his attention to a very attractive female hiker who passed me on her way up and I saw Buster no more. (actually not a chipmunk but a GOLDEN MANTLED groundsquirrel)
7-5-03

His cousin Squirrly is a highly skilled critter as shown below in this vid:

I heard it's on the rise. I think you're lucky his homeboyz were chillin' at the crib. Otherwise, there could have been trouble. Luckily, he chased that skirt instead of you.

You heard right. These guys hate the "Chip and Dale" stereotyping they were given years ago by Disney and are out to prove that they are not "nice & cute". I was scared cuz I knew this one could do serious damage. As you noted, I was fortunate that this bad boy had an eye for the ladies or who knows how this story would have turned out. Whew, that was a close call.

Maybe he was mad beacuse people keep calling him a chipmunk. He's a Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel They are indeed bold buggers.

Still a cute pic and story

Well, actually I never called him a chipmunk to his face Dan, I was too surprised to see him everytime I turned around. Thanks for your input. How is your California cohp quest going? Maybe we'll meet up on a trail again this year. : )

I guess you caught his wrath due to other people's transgressions. ;)

CoHP hasn't happened this school year so far. When I didn't have something going on, it was raining. I was going to try for Marin & Sonoma last week during my spring break but left too late, 5:20 a.m. and it took me over an hour just to get to Livermore, so I turned around. I'm headed for Mount Stakes this weekend.

It is unfortunate that the true name of that species is relatively unknown. You have in fact been one of the lucky few to spot and photograph the elusive, North American Pine Tiger.

Good grief, I had no clue I was that close to one of them.....pine tigers. Thanks for the heads up, I'll not get that close to one again. ; )

What ever animal it is, I've seen some who are really aggressive. I was sitting at a waterfall about 5 miles from the trailhead in Yellowstone, when a guy who looked a lot like that ran up my leg, accross my chest, tried to snatch the cracker I was eating, and ran down the other leg.
