Crevasse [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Crevasse
Crevasse my partner fell 15' into before we even roped up for the icefall. Lesson learned, even at 42 years of age, you cannot rope up "to early". Weird surreal moment. A chunk of moraine was blocking my view of him and all I saw when I topped it was his footprints and a black hole. No noise, nothing. I hoped that he had traversed an ice serac to the right and was just out of view, but as I neared the hole, he yelled out. We each carried a 30m rope that we were going to tie together for the rappels. This system proved valuable as I could just drop him a line. He still had to fit his crampons on a precarious snow bridge which was no picnic. Mount Andromeda, Jasper National Park, Columbia Icefields, May 8, 2006

""You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.""   --Rene Daumal
