Gendarme west face before it fell [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Gendarme west face before it fell
This is the only picture that I have showing the Gendarme as it stood in spring 1978. A bandit attempted to blow it up around 1920 as the tale goes. It finally tipped over in fall 1987.

"It finally tipped over in fall 1987. "

Many of UT's "skinniest" towers are discussed in the context "because it may not be there long" :)

I remember climbing to very near the Gendarme in '86 or so, and thinking I'd come back with gear and climb it sometime.

Not to be!
