As of 2006 or earlier, the Forest Service steers you clear away from the river valley. Past Piney Lake, FT1885 takes you well up into the trees on the north slope, with switchbacks, 200-300 feet above the river. Rejoin the original route where the River bends. Fork left, and carefully follow a decent trail north from there.
