I assume from the telephoto needed to get that shot, it was 35mm?

Yes, a 300mm telephoto lens was used with a 35mm camera setup. That lens has essentially a 6x mag factor.

I figured such. I had seen that view and knew the tooth was a ways from the road. I have a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS that is razor sharp, but I rarely bring it with me on adventures.

Your 2.8 must be a big lens - taking it on a backpacking trip might be weighty!
